Immigation Law Question

     The N.Y. Times has entered the fray over Alabama's Immigration law, adding to the International pressure against the law that goes into effect in two weeks.

     The Times story in today's paper focuses on religious (and agricultural) opposition to the bill, which has been wide and diverse. So here's the question. From a political standpoint, why in the world is the Republican majority in the legislature, and the Republican Governor, going up against religion in the Bible Belt?

Makes no political sense at all. And Bentley is a deacon is his Tuscaloosa church too.

Promised Immigration Lawsuit Filed

     The Civil Liberties Union of Alabama and The Southern Poverty Law Center have joined a national immigration group in a suit against Alabama's immigration legislation.

     An AL.com story quotes the sponsor of the new law as saying he knows the motivation of those organizations:

State Rep. Mickey Hammon, R-Decatur, defended the bill he sponsored in the Legislature, saying, "It is no surprise that liberal groups working to shield those who live here illegally are trying to block implementation of our state immigration statute."

     The suit was filed in Huntsville.

Father's Day

Things change, everyone gets older. You start to wonder how many more father's days will pass while you still have a father to spend it with. It's good then, to see how some things never change; things like the bitter, miserable, vicious lies that spew from the GOP. Take the current Elmer Fudd of the Party, John McCain, the tortured war hero who didn't have the courage to stand up to the party's support of torture. Take John, who is making this Father's Day so much happier by blaming the Arizona wildfires on illegal immigrants rather than on the drought.

But he has substantial evidence, which he will, no doubt, reveal eventually, or not reveal or simply forget about after the wildfire of hate has got beyond control. Remember when Mexicans were bringing leprosy across the border? Many will long remember Lou Dobbs' accusations but not the lack of evidence, and perhaps the wildfire libel will stick long after McCain's slide into dementia becomes all too obvious even to his supporters.

Well thanks John, for all you do and for reminding us of Republican fathers long gone like Joe McCarthy with their vaporous claims of "evidence" and I'm sure your legacy will stink long after you're gone.

The Job Creation Legislative Session

     The 2011 Regular Legislative session comes to an end tomorrow.

    The last meeting day will include passage of the budgets, which will result in fewer jobs because of proration, and other legislation that will vastly increase jobs. Bills like the Immigration bill that Governor Bentley will sign in a public ceremony tomorrow morning, and the abortion legislation.

     The new hires will be the lawyers needed to defend the state against the slew of lawsuits that will be filed against 'em.

    

SCOTUS : Business Death Penalty

     That's what critics of today's ruling are calling the decision...a death penalty for businesses, because it allows Arizona and other states to revoke the business license of a company that knowingly hires illegal immigrants.

     Then again, companies wanted personhood when it came to being able to spend money without restrictions on political campaigns, and were happy when SCOTUS gave it to them, no? Live by the court, die by the court.
