Flooding

Cameras EveryNOwhere

The National Weather Service has placed an  historic marker at the Alabama River in Montgomery, marking the day 50 years ago  last month of the highest river level in recorded Montgomery history.

That 58 foot mark was enough to flood a lot of downtown...perhaps as far inland as the old fountain at the foot of Dexter Avenue, said Mayor Todd Strange during today's news conference.

If you notice something missing in this story it's this: pictures. When a weather event occurs today, like the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, there are millions of images recorded by individuals and security cameras. But neither the National Weather Service nor unofficial city historian Mary Ann Neeley has a single shot of the event.

Ironically, we DO have two good shots of flooding in the same place in 1886!

Or maybe somebody reading this was here in 1961 and does have photos? Pass this posting along if you know someone who might! Ironically, the Alabama River had dropped just below flood stage today after heavy rains this week, so there was the usual River debris around.

You can watch the CBS 8 report on the new signs here!
